Board Resignation
Summers declared he would step back from public positions after legislative body released his repeated communications with the financier

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the board at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a series of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became publicly available.

The economist remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and eagerly await following their development".

Summers, who formerly presided over the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.

Message Exchange

The recently released messages revealed that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 arrest for suspected human trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the AI firm said it respected Summers' decision to resign.

"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the company commented.

Legislative Background

This news arrives after the entire Congress of the US legislature decided on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will afterward move to the administration of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has stated he plans to approve the measure, after modifying his position on the issue following pushback from his followers.

Message Details

A batch of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the legislative panel recently mentioned several well-known personalities in the financier's previous network, without implying any illegal behavior by those figures.

The communications showed that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with he often trying to connect the academic to prominent international personalities.

Personal Accountability

After the messages were released with the public, he expressed he accepted "complete accountability for my ill-advised choice to maintain communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he desired "to reestablish confidence and repair bonds with the persons most important to me".

Previous Positions

The economist served in leadership roles under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.

He led the university from the early 2000s and is still a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public commitments recently on this week, he indicated he would continue his teaching commitments.

Other Impacts

Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was not affiliated with the group.

The former official entered the leadership of the technology firm, which develops the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to replace its top executive the company leader.
