Pacific Bluefin Tuna Fetches Record Sum of $3.2m at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A substantial bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; ÂŁ2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the new year.
The successful bid for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the operator of a well-known sushi chain, which manages outlets throughout Japan and abroad.
"The first tuna brings a prosperous start," remarked the entrepreneur, a notable figure at the annual January sale.
Known as the Tuna King, this businessman is renowned for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.
Auction Shock and Historic Precedent
After the auction, the successful bidder told reporters that he was "surprised at the winning bid," noting, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."
This most recent purchase surpasses his own notable purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite once saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to break his own record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously associated with exorbitant prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different food company, which announced the fish would be served at its locations throughout the country.
The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a must-see event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Immediate Consumption
The record-priced tuna was promptly prepared for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi restaurants soon after the auction was finished.
"I believe like I've started the year in a auspicious way after tasting something so auspicious as the year gets underway," shared one elated diner.
